2011 Required and Suggested Summer Reading Information

All students are expected to read a least five books over the summer. For students in grades 7 to 12, one of the five is a required book. Students are responsible to purchase, borrow, or check out required reading book(s) from their local library. Also on this page are links to book reviews and booklists to help you decide what other books you might enjoy.

  • 7th grade – Return to Sender by Julia Alvarez
  • 8th – Tangerine by Edward Bloor
  • 9-10th Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
  • 11th – Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger
  • 12th -Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt and Lost Names by Richard Kim

    Dover Public Library Great Stone Face Book Awards
    Great Stone Face Book Award winners are listed here. Sponsored by CHILIS, Children’s Librarians of NH, this award is given each year to the book receiving the most votes from NH student in grades 4 – 6.

    Horn Book Magazine
    Horn Book Magazine: Find links to the Boston Globe – Horn Book Awards, a list of classic reads, and books reviews listed by topics under Fiction and non-Fiction headings. Graphic novels are included here and within each list are entries by grade level.

    Offers booklists and a brief description of titles by topic and grade.

    Young Adult Library Services Association
    Booklists for “arts and humanities, history and cultures, literature and language arts, science and technology, and social sciences.” These lists combine fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama.

    101 Books Recommended by the College Board PDF
    From the College Board: a list of 101 Great Books recommended for the college bound. The starred books are those we read in school as part of the English curriculum. Please do not read those as optional summer reading.

    This free online book site is organized by category. Once you have selected a category and a book, the book jacket will appear, as well as information on how to download books for a fee. To access the free online book, select a title, scroll to the bottom of the book jacket depicted on the page, and click the icon for “read online for free.”

    Free Online Language Site
    Livemocha
    Planning a trip to a distant place? Maybe you have always wanted to try a new language? Livemocha has interactive lessons in Russian, French, Punjabi, Kazakh, Japanese, German, Swedish, Spanish, Arabic and many others. There are some books or features you could purchase, but you do not need to. There is plenty to experiment with online.
