Painting in the art studio

Art classes are an opportunity to develop spatial rather than linear thinking and to develop areas of the mind that may not be addressed by the academic curriculum. Students learn to develop conceptual skills and to work with abstract ideas that have no “right” answers, but thoughtful and innovative ones. They discover new ways to work on developing problem-solving skills and to figure out ways to make use of ideas and materials.

Art gives us insights into society, its mores, fashion, ethics, politics, and values. Art is an integral part of human personal expression. Through the use of this expression, students increase in overall self-esteem and a general sense of well-being. Every student can benefit from artistic activity.

Curriculum Notes

Chelsea 12th Grade

Students in Kindergarten through Second Grade receive 2-3 periods of Art a week, and art is also integrated throughout their curriculum.

In Grades 3-5 students have a 40-minute art period once a week; Grade 6 has an 80-minute art period once a week. Junior High students receive five 40-minute periods of Art per week for one quarter of the year. Interested students may also use study hall time in the Art Room.

In the High School, students may carry Art as an elective course, either for a semester or the entire year. Other electives, such as Visual Media in Our Culture, have also been offered.
