The Art Block Program
Art blocks using nature
Art Blocks are designed to supplement the academic program with a variety of experiences that the students may not get in the classroom. Arts and crafts activities and performing arts choices are offered (e.g., ceramics, block-printing, stained glass, weaving, sewing, drama, dance). The name “Art Block” expresses the value that the school places on Art and a deliberate bias to use this time for the arts; however, activities other than Art are also offered (e.g., athletics, keyboarding, service).
Mask making
Art Blocks give students an opportunity to make choices about areas of interest and the experience of being part of a larger learning community. All of the Art Blocks offer an opportunity for children of different ages to work together in small groups. Since each Art Block only lasts eight to ten weeks, students can try new things without having to make a big commitment. As a result, by the time a student graduates we hope they will have had an exposure to a wide variety of arts and will develop new interests based on the experiences that they had. Art Blocks meet during two 55-minute periods each week. |
