Colleges

The Health Education program reflects the school’s commitment to educate the “whole child” by promoting physical wellness, personal safety, positive self-esteem, and conflict resolution during scheduled classes, class meetings, special events, and in daily casual interactions.

The primary goal is to provide students with a base of knowledge and opportunities to practice skills that will enable them to make emotionally, socially, and physically healthy choices, ultimately leading to a healthy lifestyle.

The belief that the students’ school career should prepare them for life is central to the ongoing development of the program. Much of that preparation is, of course, determined by the social issues and concerns that we all live with in our world today. Such issues and concerns include the stress, anxiety, and grief generated by recent world events, AIDS, substance abuse, and divorce. The curriculum also strives to help students understand and address issues of sexuality, conflict resolution, peer pressure, and academic pressure.

h2. Curriculum Notes

Health Ed classes are required for all students each year.

Kindergarten through sixth graders have a weekly class period for Health Ed, in addition to a weekly class meeting.

Junior High and High school students have a three week block of daily Health Ed classes each semester.

In addition, fifth through eighth graders begin the school year with an overnight trip to Camp Wilmot, during which old and new students get to know each other and their teachers through a variety of community-building activities. The department also sponsors a day-long “Health Fair” for seventh through twelfth graders every other spring.
